Walt Disney World...

Alert: No More Free Biking with Mickey at Fort Wilderness

Recently, gatehouses have been installed at the entrances of both Fort Wilderness Campground and Fort Wilderness Lodge; now registered guests only. Sadly, this means much less "free Disney" for locals. We leave the information below for campers and other Park guests. (Detailed map and photos below.)

Here's a Great Alternative: Biking at Celebration; very nearby, inexpensive rentals, and many miles of biking in a park-like setting.

Biking at Disney World... Comments and Photos

While most visit Walt Disney World Florida for the theme parks and entertainment, there also are a variety of short biking options. Bike rentals (Disney prices) are available at several of the resorts. Most roads within the confines of the individual resorts are bike-friendly. However, biking between resorts is not recommended as there is a lot of traffic on the main arteries. Tip: While cycling options within the various Disney resorts are fairly short, we found the most enjoyable recreational biking to be at Fort Wilderness - various short trails within a pine, oak, and cypress setting. but long enough to be an enjoyable recreational ride for both children and adults. Where else can you see Bambi face-to-face in the "wild" without fences? Ride a bike, pet a goat, go paddling, fishing or swimming.

Trail between Wilderness Lodge and Fort Wilderness

A 3/4-mile paved recreational trail for biking, walking, and jogging runs between Wilderness Lodge and Fort Wilderness, along with a separate unpaved nature trail (mostly hard-packed, easy for fat tire bikes). The entire Fort Wilderness campsite area is bike-friendly. There are campsites for recreational vehicles and tents, cabins for rent, as well as primitive camping at Creekside Meadow (groups of 20 or more). The Trading Posts have restaurants, shops, and restrooms. Magic Kingdom horses are stabled at the Tri-Circle-D Ranch, and horseback and carriage rides are available. Bike rentals for children and adults are at Wilderness Lodge and at the campground Bike Barn (Disney prices). Some guests bring their own bikes. At Wilderness Lodge, pick up the recreational trail behind the bus stop.
