The 14-foot, paved trail with long sand ridge hills is popular with road bikers and Lake Apopka Loop riders, but casual recreational bikers, like us, may not enjoy the hilly terrain. Most of the trail is roadside and unshaded, with road crossings - some busy - at businesses, schools, recreational facilities and neighborhoods. Before being developed, this was a more scenic ride with wide vistas. Today, we found the northern section - less developed (for now) with some wider views - to be more pleasant.
Here we visit the Hancock Trail from south to north.
A path runs from the National Training Facility (a sports training and fitness facility) along Don Wickham Drive, to the beginning of the trail at the corner of Oakley-Seaver Drive. Parking at Cooper Memorial Library is about one-half mile along Oakley-Seaver. An underpass goes under N. Hancock here and the trail continues on the east side of the road, coming to another underpass. The trail then runs along the western side of N. Hancock to Old Hwy. 50.
Cross Old Hwy. 50. Here the trail meets the South Lake Trail and they run together for a short distance along a powerline. In about 1/4 mile, a spur cuts off on the right, back to Hancock Rd. at Highland Ranch Rd. Cross Hancock Rd. to the east side, then cross Highland Ranch Rd. and continue north alongside Hancock Rd.
The trail continues roadside, past residential areas, some businesses, and Minneola High School. Across the street, parking is available at Minneola Athletic Complex . The trail then crosses the Florida Turnpike on an enclosed overpass. From here, mostly new housing with some not-yet developed areas to SR 561A.
This newest section of the trail was developed as part of the extension of Hancock Rd. The trail continues roadside, past all new development 1.25 miles to Sugarloaf Mountain Rd.
From here, development ends (for now) and some nice views. In one mile, cross CR 455 and go east. The trail ends in 1/4 mile at Wolfs Head Rd. Use the path to the Green Mountain Scenic Overlook (restrooms, parking, picnic, observation tower) and the Lake Apopka North Shore Loop Trail.
