"New Urbanism" focuses on the development principles of cities and towns built in the centuries prior to the automobile and urban sprawl. In the Orlando area, we visited five communities built on the principles of New Urbanism. These are human-scale communities (often referred to as "the bubble" by residents), featuring walkable blocks and streets, housing and shopping in close proximity , numerous public spaces, and safe multi-use trails that make walking and biking practical alternatives to the automobile. We enjoyed exploring each community by bicycle with summaries below. Click on individual community links below for full details.

New Urban Communities
(see detailed biking maps via links below)
Avalon Park - serving southeast Orange County. 16 miles of off-street trails run aside Avalon Park's main roads and through residential neighborhoods, with easy access to parks, schools, restaurants, and shopping.
Baldwin Park - located close to Downtown Orlando and Winter Park. Lake Baldwin Trail is a 2.5 mile paved loop around Lake Baldwin, steps away from the Baldwin Park village center. Link to residential neighborhoods, schools, parks, restaurants and shops, and to the Cady Way Trail.
Celebration - located in Osceola County near Disney World. Developed by the Walt Disney Company, Celebration's off-street trails and boardwalks connect neighborhoods, parks, schools, restaurants, and shopping. 7-mile bike tour map available.
Lake Nona - near Orlando International Airport, serving the growing Medical City. Lake Nona has over 44 miles of paved and unpaved multi-use trail, connecting neighborhoods, shopping and restaurants, parks, schools, and medical facilities. Part of the larger Orlando Southeast Trail network.
New Independence Bike Path - located within the Independence community, part of Horizon West in southwest Orange County. Connecting residential, schools and parks, with links to Hamlin Town Center and other Horizon West neighborhoods.
These design and development principles can be applied to new development, urban infill and revitalization, and preservation. They can be applied to all scales of development in the full range of places including rural Main Streets, booming suburban areas, urban neighborhoods, dense city centers, and even entire regions. This type of human-scaled development is shown to promote a sense of community.
