New Independence Bike Path
Reported: August 2018
The New Independence Bike Path is located within the Independence community, part of Horizon West in southwest Orange County. Horizon West is a 38-square-mile planned development built on principles of New Urbanism to include biking and pedestrian transportation alternatives. Linking residential neighborhoods with parks, schools and shopping, this concept is similar to other Orlando "New Urban" communities (Lake Nona, Celebration, Avalon Park, and Baldwin Park). This large development is divided into six "villages" - Hamlin Town Center, Bridgewater, Lakeside, Seidel, Hickory Nut, and Ovation - each composed of several neighborhoods with a variety of housing styles, schools, parks and recreation. Note: Here we show biking on the main trail at Independence - a small portion of the total biking available throughout Horizon West. (Detailed map and photos below.)
Location: Orange County (Winter Garden)
End Points: New Independence Parkway / Ficquette Road (loop)
Mileage: 6 miles (++ on paths linking communities throughout Horizon West)
Surface: Asphalt, 12-14'
Trailheads/Parking: Independence Community Park,
Old Grove Park (See map)
Nearby Points of Interest: Orange County National

Bike Shops / Rentals:
Trek Bicycle (Winter Garden; sales, service )
Page Summary:
We found the section from the Independence entrance at Ficquette Road to Independence Community Park to be a pleasant ride. The path then runs along a powerline with no shade before feeding back onto New Independence Parkway where it runs alongside the road to the Hamlin Town Center. Although mostly located roadside, there is a buffer and trees planted to provide shade. Extensions run off the path through neighborhoods and to parks.
This section starts at the entrance to Independence at Ficquette Road, and runs along New Independence Pkwy. The wide path runs to the Town Square with its reflecting pond and clock tower, and Town Square Residents Club. This section then continues past several ponds and the Independence Elementary School, ending at Independence Community Park (the Commons, Skatepark, playground).
From the park, cross New Independence Pkwy. Here the path turns away from the road to run along a powerline, passing several ponds and residential areas. Back onto New Independence Pkwy. it runs alongside the roadway to the Hamlin Town Center - a commercial area providing services to all villages (restaurants, shopping, professional offices, etc.)
